Block billing is when a lawyer lumps several separate tasks into a single time entry — "Review documents; draft memo; call with client — 4.2 hrs" — instead of listing each task with its own time. It hides how long each task actually took, which is exactly why it can quietly inflate a bill by 10–30%.

Why block billing matters

When tasks are bundled, you can't tell whether the four hours were spent well or padded. A single vague total is unauditable by design.

How to spot it

Look for entries that string multiple verbs together under one time figure — "reviewed, revised, corresponded, and conferred." Each of those is a separate task that should carry its own time.

What to do about it

Ask for an itemized re-issue. A firm that bills in good faith will provide it.
